The Women of Wakanda

Its been about 2 weeks since Black Panther opened with its record-breaking box office success. I would be remiss if I did not share my thoughts on the Women of Wakanda.

There is so much we can learn from the Women of Wakanda in the Mavel’s mega blockbuster hit the Black Panther.

The women of Wakanda display strength, intelligence, skill, self-reliance, self-determination, perseverance, fearlessness, and a whole lot of fierceness. They do life on their own terms. They pursue their purpose relentlessly. They don’t let anything or anyone get in the way of reaching their full potential. Seriously, I could go on and on and on about how the women are portrayed in the movie. Each embodies their own unique superpower.

Suffice it to say, what got my attention right off the top was the movie's incredible female cast.

Wakanda's Ramonda (Angela Bassett)

Ramonda is T’Challa and Shuri’s mother. She is the rock, the royal matriarch of the family. She was also the adviser to the king before his untimely death. She is strong and unwavering in the face of challenge. She is solid, no shaking.

Big Takeaway: Be strong and unwavering no matter what. You are stronger than your breakup. You are your own rock. You are solid. You are your own rescue. Love yourself beyond your breakup. Make you the priority in your life. Your breakup happened for a reason. Rather than be defeated choose to be strengthened by it. Choose to see the good in it. Trust that it is for your good.

Wakanda's Shuri (Letitia Wright)

Shuri is T’Challa’s sister. She is a young, tech-savvy teenager, a tech genius. She is a gifted scientist who holds her own and can’t be rivaled in all of Wakanda. She is fun, quick witted and hilariously funny, a bit sarcastic at times. She is brainy, smart and super intelligent.

Big Takeaway: Be smart about your breakup. It happened. Now here’s what you’re going to do about it. You take responsibility for your part in it. You learn the lessons and you move on. You’re over it and on with it. You refuse to let it hold you down or hold you back in your life. You’ve got more important things to do with your time.

Wakanda's Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o)

Nakia is T’Challa’s ex. More importantly she is a secret spy who stands for the good and service of others. She is there to help those in needs. She is fiercely independent, and rebellious. Her purpose and her mission is to make the world a better place.

Big Takeaway: Take a stand for yourself. Be of service to others. Use your breakup for your good and for the good of others. Be unapologetic about your breakup. Own it. Be a little rebellious if you have to. Do what is right for you. Do your breakup on your terms. Do you! Your breakup is your responsibility. What you do with it, how you handle it is totally up to you. Your breakup is truly your power.

Wakanda's Okoye (Danai Guriria)

Okoye is T’Challa’s bodyguard. She is the general of the Dora Milaje Wakanda’s all-woman military group. She is a highly skilled warrior. She is fierce. She is a great leader and strategist.

Big Takeaway: Be a warrior! Refuse to let your breakup take you down or defeat you. Choose to rise above. Fight for yourself. Show up for yourself. Step up in your life. Be bold. Be unapologetic. Be fierce. Don't let your breakup has the final say over your life.

What We Can Learn from the Women of Wakanda?

These women are truly an inspiration. Their characters are larger than life and really speak to the power of women. They all bring their own superpower. Nakia’s survival skills, Shuri’s quick wits and tech. Okoye’s fighting prowess and Ramonda’s resilience and strength in the face of adversity.

They all define themselves on their own terms. Which of the women do you identify with most? Click here to take a quick quiz to find out!
Honestly, I see myself in all of them. Watching these women in the film reminded me of my own strength and that I am stronger than I think I am. It reminded me that my breakup does not define me. I define me. If I had to pick one of the women I’d say that I identify the most with Okoye. She is fierce and fearless. She doesn’t play the victim. But instead she stands in her power and owns it! She doesn’t need to be rescued or saved. She is her own rescue. She is her own warrior.
