Alter Ego: Creating a New Identity after your Breakup

Alter Ego Creating a New Identity after your Breakup

The Power of an Alter Ego

Alter ego is an “alternative personality”. Another way to think about an alter ego is as a “second self”, another version of yourself that is separate from your day-to-day self. I like to think of my alter ego as an “intimate and trusted friend”. Yes, it sounds weird. But it is more common than you think. Countless celebrities and the world’s greatest athletes have alter egos. There is Beyoncé’s “Sasha Fierce”. Mariah Carey’s “Mimi”. Lady Gaga’s "Jo Calderone". Jennifer Lopez’s “Lola”. The late Kobe Bryant’s “Black Mamba”. I could go on and on. But you get the idea. Whatever the reason they come in clutch (handy). Especially when you are dealing with tough situations that life throws you. Breakups being one of them. Keep reading if you want to create your own alter ego.

Breakups Do a Number on You

I remember feeling after my breakup like I didn’t know who I was. You give so much of your self and who you are in a relationship that when it ends you are grappling with who you are. Much of our identity gets lost in a relationship. Your sense of self, your voice, who you are seem foreign, like strangers to you. It is almost like you don’t recognize the person staring back at you in the mirror.

Enter Your Alter Ego

An alter ego is a secret weapon. It is your secret. What I love about alter egos is that they embody “super” qualities and characteristics that are different from you. They have an edge. And the good news you get to choose what super powers they have. You get to create them. That is the fun of it all because an alter ego is something you choose. Not to get confused with split personality. It is not that. Nicki Minaj wins hands down. Count them. She has 19 alter egos. There is Cookie, Onika Tanya Maraj, Chun Li, Barbie Balla, Female Weezy, The Harajuku Barbie, Lap Dance Nika, Martha Zolanski, Nicki Lewinsky, Nicki Teresa, Nicki the Boss, Nicki the Ninja, Nicole, Norman, Point Dexter, Roman Zolanski, Romania, Rosa, and Tyrone. Each alter ego serves a different purpose and plays a different role in your life.

Why Alter Ego’s Work

An alter ego gives you the chance to shift your identity and explore new forms of personal expression. They allow you to discover new things, to test out, experiment and to embody those qualities of that ego. This gives you license to be who you want to be and to create what you want in your life. You can dress up and act the part to your heart’s content. When you shift your identity it influences your thoughts. Your thoughts influences your feelings and your behavior. It’s really powerful. So, if you want to change your life, change your identity. So don’t hold back. Create an elaborate alter-ego for yourself. Make them as amazing as you want. Exploit your alter ego and create your own personal dream team…aka your Power Squad.

Your Mission Should You Choose to Accept it is

Here is your mission. You are to create you’re an alter ego for yourself for the purpose of your choosing. My alter ego got me through my breakup and helped me to move on and create “Banking from Breakup”.

  1. Give them a name.
  2. Take a selfie or find an image that represents who they are.
  3. Create a backstory, give them an origin.
  4. Define their role and purpose.
  5. Describe who they are. Give them all the superpowers!
  6. Give them a birth date when they came to be.

Really take the time to to flesh out how this new alter ego, this other self thinks, what they believe, how they feel, their emotions and how they act or behave. Make it as detailed and vivid as possible, down to the tiniest of details.

Step in to it!

Here’s the thing the world is your oyster when you have an alter ego…or several like Nicki Minaj. So don’t underestimate the power of an alter ego and what you can do when you step in to it! Try it. You just might really like it.
